SEG Honorary Lecture by Dirk Gajewski

January 16, 2019

We were grateful to host Dirk Gajewski on his SEG Honorary Lecture tour about “Wavefront attributes – a tool for processing, imaging and model building”.

Informative Icebreaker WS 2018/19

October 30, 2018

In our first meeting for 2018/19 many new students of RWTH Aachen participated and also joined the Chapter as members. A few short presentations were given on the different research groups.
We continued our evening in a bar networking over a beer.

SEG Anaheim 2018

October 13, 2018

Students and researchers. members of the RWTH Aachen SEG Student Chapter, presented their studies, chaired sessions and led workshops.

Hydrogeopysics Summer-school 27-31/8/18

August 26, 2018

The summer-school focused on experimental data acquisition, processing and analyzing geophysical data, for characterizing the near-surface for hydrological applications.

* The summer-school was coordinated and funded by Geoverbund ABC/J (geoverbund-abcj.de) and scientifically coordinated by Anja Klotzsche. Student Chapter members were involved in the teaching, and coordination, of the field experiments and demonstrated the different geophysical methods.

IDEA League master thesis defenses

August 21, 2018

12 students from the IDEA League master program in applied geophysics, who had their research in RWTH Aachen, gave a defense on their master thesis.

Excursion to FZJ IBG-3 Agrosphere Hydrogeophysics

October 04, 2018

1. Hydrogeophysical Imaging and Characterisation Research Group members in Agrosphere (IBG-3) presented and demonstrated the methods: GPR (surface and borehole), ERT, EMI.
2. We visited the FZJ Selshausen field test site, which is facilitated with rhizotron, lysimeter and radiometer facilities ;
3. We visited Jülich Supercomputing Centre.

Visiting the field test sites and supercomputer at Forschungszentrum Jülich.

Student Chapter meeting - June

June 12, 2018

We had two great technical talks given by our Chapter members. We also had a geophysical quiz !

The program:

  1. "Ground Penetrating Radar Full-Waveform Inversion - Introduction" - Prof. Jan van der Kruk

  2. "Towards 3D Ground Penetrating Radar Full-Waveform Inversion" - Amirpasha Mozaffari, (PhD)

Christmas Party and linear inversion Tutorial

December 13, 2017

We held simple workshop on a typical geophysical method: Linear Inversion.
At this workshop, each of the attendees will run the tutorial through a Jupyter Notebook.  The purpose of is to deepen into this geophysical process algorithm and to learn its implementation in code. The tutorials are implemented in Python and provided by the SEG. Because no new programming will be actually be done, knowing other programming language will suffice to understand the code.

"Modelling GPR (and more) using gprMax" - workshop

January 11, 2018

Advanced gprMax two-days workshop (click to program) co-organised by RWTH Aachen SEG Student Chapter. In collaboration with IBG-3 at the research center Jülich, we hosted Dr. Craig Warren, one of the lead developer of gprMax for a second and advanced workshop about “Modeling GPR (and more) using gprMax“.
In the workshop we learned and used gprMax:
1. to model antennas.
2. to simulate materials with dispersive properties
3. to use heterogeneous soil model and rough surface modelling.
We thank Craig for his very interesting workshops. Actually, some of us are already using gprMax in their research projects.

“An introduction to gprMax” workshop

November 28, 2017

Introduction to gprMax workshop (click to program) co-organised by RWTH Aachen SEG Student Chapter, In collaboration with IBG-3 at the research center Jülich.

We hosted Dr. Craig Warren, one of the lead developer of gprMax for a second and advanced workshop about “Modeling GPR (and more) using gprMax“.
In the introduction workshop we learned and used gprMax:
1. Background and theory of the Finite-Difference Time-Domain (FDTD) method
2. Overview of gprMax, software design and features/capabilities
3. Installation of gprMax
4. My first simulation - a simple 2D example

First Meeting, Election of board
